Cruyff steps down from Ajax board

14 April 2012 21:36

All five members of Ajax's executive board, including Johan Cruyff and Edgar Davids, have stepped down from their positions at the club.

The Eredivisie giants have been blighted by internal conflicts over the proposed appointment of Louis van Gaal as the club's chief executive.

Cruyff claimed the other four members went behind his back to hire the new man, and the resignations come after an Amsterdam court blocked Van Gaal's arrival.

The Barcelona legend was the last to step down and there has been no clarification of the future of the five figures, nor there has been any information on potential replacements.

"AFC Ajax can confirm that Johan Cruyff has stepped down from his seat as member of the board and will retire at a time determined by the club," a statement on Ajax's official website reads.

"Ajax strives to provide a short-term solution before making further announcements on the filling of the resulting vacancy."

Ajax currently sit first in the Eredivisie standings with 61 points, three ahead of second-placed AZ.
